The Alzheimer’s Association has an annual fundraiser called The Longest Day. Around the world, chapters of The Alzheimer’s Association organize groups who do fundraisers on the longest day of the year, wherein volunteers do things like walkathons, knitting, etc., and ask people to donate money to raise funds for Alzheimer’s disease research and care for families. A few years ago, Not a Pipe Publishing started a The Longest Day team called Writing Against the Darkness where writers gather, some in person but mostly via Zoom, and write about whatever they want from dawn until dusk on the summer solstice. This year, that’s Saturday, June 21th, 2025.

Over the last few years, we've put together a team of writers from around the world. Some of us got together at a beautiful beach house on the Oregon coast a couple years ago. Others wrote in their homes and shared their progress with us via social media. We wrote more than 50,000 words our first day. (That's right; we completed a full NaNoWriMo in a single day!) We raised over $5000 dollars just by asking friends and family to support our team via social media. That's $5000 dollars more of research to find a cure, care for those currently suffering from Alzheimer's, and (I love that The Alzheimer's Association focuses on this) support for the family members who are caring for those afflicted with the disease. The Alzheimer’s Association handles all the money; we just let our networks know we’re participating and direct them to our team page to donate.
Since then, we've broken those writing and fundraising records, writing together on the Longest Day and on the shortest, Winter Solstice, and connecting via Zoom. Join the team and get the link, and we'll write together from 5:27 am to 9:03 pm on Saturday, June 21th, 2025 (though some writers choose other days or times, and that’s fine!)
